Social Exclusion Can Happen To Anyone

There is no doubt that social exclusion is something that can happen to anyone.  However like most things there are some who are far more significantly at risk than others.  Research has clearly shown that people with certain backgrounds and experiences may be disproportionately more likely to be sufferers of social exclusion.

The key risk factors will include low income, family conflict, problems at school, being an ex-prisoner and perhaps being a member of an ethnic minority.  Having mental health problems, age and disability are three more factors as well as living in a deprived neighbourhood irrespective of whether it is in an urban or rural area.

Following on from growing up in a low income household can mean you are more likely to end up unemployed or as a single parent of whichever sex.  Children who have grown up in a home where family conflict was rife will be more likely to suffer a larger risk of homelessness or may run away, offend or even start taking drugs.

Youngsters who have been in care are disproportionately likely to leave school with no qualifications and start off their adult life unemployed.  They may even become teenage parents, spend time in prison or become homeless.
